LIVE-WIRE LEARNING and ultra-fast broadband are providing extension Maths for students at NORTHERN SOUTHLAND COLLEGE.
"The LWL online software is especially useful to students as it can reinforce learning they are doing at school or even be used within schools as a general resource or extension activity. As it is browser based it is available to students at school and at home or anywhere the students have Internet access. Parents can also be involved in the learning process as all the modules are held online "in the cloud". The greatest skill I believe you can help students develop using this system is their reflective learning, or metacognitive skills not just their mathematics skills. We develop these skills by encouraging students to reflect on their incorrect answers (as the system provides a model solution when they get a question wrong). Students are also able to 'reverse engineer' a problem working backward from knowing what the answer was and backward to how it was worked out.
At NSC we have used the online system for numerous years and now that we have fibre broadband the software is able to work so much better."

"I am finding the books very good. I started giving the extract in the book as a kind of test after the on-line work, then going over the suggested answers with the students. Now though, I find it better to let them do the on-line work then give them the book and the answers and ask them to put together a good answer using those notes. They are mostly happy with what they produce and will have a book with good model answers to use for revision."
